WHAT IS
PULMONARY
ARTERIAL
HYPERTENSION?
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) involves high blood pressure in the arteries that connect the heart and lungs. It is a serious condition, and it may progress over time. PAH can cause imbalances in three naturally occurring substances in your body. These substances are involved in three foundational pathways that can affect PAH and there are medications available that target each pathway.
CONSIDERING THE FOUNDATIONAL PATHWAYS IS KEY

Nitric Oxide Pathway

Medications target the nitric oxide pathway by helping to keep blood vessels open.

Endothelin Pathway

Medications target the endothelin pathway by helping to block the extra endothelin that contracts blood vessels.

Prostacyclin Pathway

Medications target the prostacyclin pathway by helping to prevent clotting in the arteries and by slowing the thickening of blood vessels.

TAKE THE QUIZ
PAH AND SCLERODERMA
PAH can progress rapidly in patients with connective tissue disease such as scleroderma. If you have PAH associated with scleroderma, you may want to connect with your doctor and learn how that could affect you.
